New app offers free, live rail information

Train company Chiltern Railways has launched a new app which gives passengers free of charge, live train information on all UK routes, not just those operated by the company.
Previously, live train information was only available in paid-for apps. For example, the Rail Planner Live app developed by Thales Information Systems costs up to £4.99, depending on which phone it is used on. The popular Trainline app does not currently feature real-time train information.
Passengers can also buy tickets with no booking fee for any UK rail journey through the app, which has been developed by technology firms Masabi and Atos Origin.
Thomas Ableman, director of Chiltern Railways, said: “We are always looking at how we can improve the service we give to our customers. One of the key ways we can do this is to ensure that our customers have access to real time information at all times and for all operators. Our app also gives our customers the ability to buy, receive and display tickets. It really is a one stop app for everything you need for travelling by train.”
