Chart of the week: High-speed rail networks

This week’s announcement that the construction of a second high-speed rail line would go ahead in the UK gave us the perfect opportunity to look at high-speed rail networks around the world.
The map shows lines in use already, those under construction and those planned as at 1 November 2011. The accepted definition of high-speed is 200 km/h, as defined by the International Union of Railways (UIC).
